3 Basic Dog Whispering Tips

Dog Psychology - Dog Whispering
Here are the top 3 secrets for properly training your new dog or puppy. It boils down to pack socialization, consistent response and early intervention. These tips should make a big difference in the long term relationship between you and your dog.

Tip # 1 Properly Pack Leadership

Simply stated, your dog needs to know that you're in charge. Since dogs are pack animals they are either going to be leaders or followers. Knowing that you are in charge is key to a healthy relationship between dogs and human. They will intuitively test the role of leader with you. It is up to you to clarify their pack position.

If your dog currently thinks that he's the leader of your family's pack, then you need to re-assert yourself as the pack leader. This doesn't require spanking or shouting. It does mean being firm and clear. Your dog wants to be assured of your ability and desire to take charge.

Dogs respond to dominance and leadership. You can demonstrate that by a few simple behaviors such as eating your meals first; ensuring that your dog waits at the door for you to walk through first; don't walk around your dog if he's sitting in your way; and deciding when your dog gets your attention by ignoring barking behavior that they expect will get your attention.

Tip # 2: Be Consistent, Firm and Fair

One of the most important things you can do is to be consistent, firm and fair when rewarding good behavior and properly discouraging undesirable behavior. Otherwise your dog will become confused and over time not respond or worse yet, lose respect for your commands. If you don't re-enforce desired behavior and follow through the dog will decide when and when not to respond.

If you've been consistent, firm and fair with your expectations, then your dog will better understand what to do and will become consistent with his response. A dog who clearly understands the rules of conduct and the consequences of inappropriate behavior will be more satisfied and content with their role.

Tip #3: Early Intervention Is A Key

It is much easier to train a new puppy than it is to teach and old dog new tricks.

Begin pack leadership training early with a new puppy. They are much easier to train before they have a chance to develop bad habits and improper behavior.

Rewarding positive behavior is the most effective training tool dog owners have in their training toolbox. However from time to time you will also need to correct your dog for poor behavior. Usually a clear and firm 'No" will be sufficient. There is never reason to shout or hit your dog.

If you follow these top 3 tips you will have a happy dog and wonderful companion.
