Chihuahua dog obedience training can be very challenging. They are a stubborn breed that is easily distracted during training sessions. Training these little guys is extremely important in order for them to be even tempered and properly socialized.
Here are a few pointers to help you get on the right track with Chihuahua dog obedience training:
1. Begin obedience training right away. The earlier the better.
2. Housebreaking is normally the first command to teach your dog.
3. After he has mastered the housebreaking lesson the next basic dog obedience commands are 'Sit', 'Stay' and 'Down' .
4. Effective dog obedience training requires that you teach him in an area where there are no distractions (in a park or around other people or animals). Be sure to properly praise and reward him when he is behaves appropriately. And keep the sessions short. Chihuahua's have short attention spans.
5. Establish early on that you are the alpha leader of the pack. Chihuahua's may be small in size, but they view themselves as pack leaders until shown otherwise.
6. Using phrased commands only confuses dogs. Use consistent one word commands such as 'sit', 'down', or 'stay'.
7. The tone of your voice is important. No need to shout or yell, but your voice tone should be firm and clear.
Disciplining your dog should be no more than a firm 'No'. If your dog fails to follow the command simply say 'No' and do not give him a treat or praise him in any way. Start the process over and be patient.
Chihuahua training will require patience and determination. This will take time. The biggest hurdle will be breaking him of the pack leadership mentality. Your little Chihuahua is a sweet little critter, but he will demand the alpha role until you take it from him.
