Before you decide that you want to own a boxer dog you should do a little research about their personality and physical characteristics. Boxer dogs are high spirited, active and because of their large size require a lot of room, particularly if kept indoors. They require a lot of attention and affection. Early socialization and pack leadership training is essential. Remember, they are large, lovable, friendly companions and when young puppy's they will behave like young puppies. They will chew and dig like any other hunter breed – however when a boxer chews and digs it is bigger holes and more destructive.
Here are seven tips on how to manage some of these issues:
1. Genetics are important. If you can, spend time around the parents to learn about their personality. This will give you a general idea about off spring.
2. Find a breeder with experience. Breeders who raise boxers for money but aren't also experienced trainers may not breed dogs with a lineage of affection.
3. By nature boxer dogs don't like water. This may come as a surprise given their history of hunting and herding. Take that into consideration.
4. If you keep the boxer entertained with a lot of brisk exercises it will help socialize them properly. The old adage about 'time being the devils workshop' applies here. A bored boxer puppy tends to be more destructive because of their energy level.
5. Before you purchase a boxer make sure you have the room and time to manage a large dog. A home with plenty of yard space is ideal. Have some durable toys for your pup to play with.
6. Early training with your boxer dog puppy will prevent a lot of problems in the future. Use positive reinforcement behavior such as food to make training easier. Boxer dogs with a happy disposition and personality will adapt to training easier.
7. Boxers do not do as well in training in groups of mixed breeds. The best dog obedience training method is to do individual training with the boxer dog breed.
If you put in the time, particularly at an early age a boxer dogs will be a wonderful family pet and companion. Boxer dogs are very smart and crave the close and loving relationship with his/her owner.
