Puppy Crate Training: Why It's An Effective Method

Puppy crate training may seem harsh, but it really is anything but that! The fact is that dogs are normally very den oriented. They like to have a place to call their own and they like to be in a comfortable, quiet location. Crate training is a method of training that employs the use of a crate large enough to accommodate the dog at its fully grown size.

There are many benefits to this type of training and in fact can prove to be the basis for all of your training with the dog. There are several reasons why puppy crate training should be the means that you use to keep your dog trained and secure.

How Does It Work

There are several ways that this type of training can work for you. The goal is to first purchase a crate that is large enough for the dog at his full grown size. Place it in a warm location and leave it there. When you leave the home or you go to bed at night, puppy goes in his crate.

While the first night or so the puppy will cry and whine, this will quickly subside and most dogs end up liking to sleep and be in their crate. During the time when the dog is out of the crate, you can still keep the crate open as he may retreat to it when its time for a nap.

As the dog becomes more familiar with the crate, he'll enjoy it. There are also other benefits to using it.

When the dog is in his crate, he won't mess the crate through defecation or urination. Since they will not do this where they sleep, this is a great way to teach him to control his bladder. When the crate is opened, the first thing that puppy should do is be taken to his potty location. He'll quickly learn where he is supposed to go.

When the dog is behaving badly, your crate can again be beneficial. The puppy is place in the crate for misbehaving and this way he or she will be separated from his owners, something he doesn't want to do. This will teach the dog that the behavior is bad and will help him to understand that it is not acceptable. Soon, the poor behavior is stopped and the dog doesn't have to go into the crate other than bed time or when you leave him and he'll learn that.

There are various ways to set up puppy crate training, all with positive, motivational training approaches. This is not a punishment for your dog, but a good way to train a dog for sure success. What's more, he'll grow to truly love his crate and look forward to bed time in it.

Because it's his location, he'll love the place he can go to when he wants a nap or to be left alone, too. Learning how to use puppy crate training could be one of the best moves that you make for your pet.
